During the winter months, many plant lovers turn their attention to the group of plants that remain green year-round: the evergreens. And it’s to this group that the Blue Point Juniper belongs. At the species level, it’s known as Juniperus chinensis — sometimes called the Chinese juniper.
The Blue Point Juniper is special in that it can be planted in your yard as a perennial feature. Unlike many of the tropical plants sold by Winter Gardens, the Blue Point Juniper handles winter temperatures without flinching. It grows at a rate of 12-15″ each year, easily approaching and exceeding 10-12 feet in height.
Are you interested in adding your Blue Point to your outdoor landscape? Choose a location that gets full sun! The Blue Point Juniper will perform best in a location where it can bask in direct sunlight. It is not picky about soil as long as it is not planted in wet or soggy ground, and once established the tree handles dry weather with relative ease, but we recommend careful watering during the first year. A balanced fertilizer applied a couple times early in the growing season will boost your juniper’s vigor. And it’s a good idea to water in the fertilizer!
So change things up a bit this time! Enjoy your plant in the house for a time if you wish, but do plant your Blue Point Juniper in the yard and follow the basic care instructions outlined above. We hope you will enjoy your plant for many years!
