Dipladinia plants are a cheerful native of South America. They display an upright growth habit for a time, with trailing runners soon cascading downwards. These plants will produce flushes of trumpet-like blossoms that attract hummingbirds and sometimes last for several months, especially in regions of cooler summer temperatures. Their tropical nature makes them both a challenging and a fun exotic in temperate climates. Indeed, these tropical plants can still be grown well outside of the tropics!
Growers in temperate climates either 1) grow their Dipladinia plants as outdoor annuals or 2) keep their plants indoors for at least part of the year. When grown outdoors, Dipladinia generally appreciate full-sun, although mid-afternoon shade can be beneficial. As an indoor plant, very bright indirect light works well.
Keep an eye on the watering needs of your Dipladinia. These plants are fairly drought tolerant, yet they will still need watering on a schedule. As you settle into your routine, remember that it’s better to underwater than over-water. The top few inches of soil should dry out before you water each time.
Finally, ensure that your Dipladinia has sufficient nutrition for optimal growth. A balanced soluble fertilizer applied monthly will meet your plant’s needs. Cease all fertilization during the fall and winter season, when your plant will not need additional nutrition.
Yes, they are cheery, exotic, and fun. Why not add a Dipladinia to your garden scheme this year? Decide how you will grow it, make sure it has the water, light, and nutrition it needs, and look forward to a display of brightly-colored blooms.
