Dish gardens are the signature product of Winter Gardens Greenhouse–and for good reason. As gifts for loved ones, dish gardens shine. They can make anniversaries unforgettable and special events memorable. And for those who are just spicing up the family room dish gardens also fill a unique niche. One advantage of Winter Gardens dish gardens is that they will outlast a typical cut flower bouquet. And since they are available in multiple sizes (mini, small, medium, large, and jumbo) and styles (different colors, ceramics, baskets, and metal tins), shopping for the perfect garden can be great fun!
Unlike a cut flower arrangement, your dish garden consists of living, intact plants. With proper care, your garden will last for several months–some have even had them last several years! But to enjoy your dish garden the longest, you’ll have to follow some simple care guidelines.
First, we do not recommend that you attempt to fertilize your dish garden. Simply place your garden in moderate indirect light and in a location where you will be able to enjoy it’s beauty. Water is a slightly different story, but watch out here! Obviously, the plants in your new garden will need some moisture. However, your new dish garden already holds moisture well. There are no drainage holes in the bottom of your garden, and moss covers much of the soil surface. While these factors help retain moisture, they also make it critical that you do not over-water your garden! In fact, over-watering your garden will quickly cause plants to drown and rot. Wait until your garden is drying out significantly before adding any water.
Sometimes one or two plants will show signs of dehydration while all the others look fine. In this case, apply 1/2 cup water directly to the individual plants that are wilting. This will keep individual plants perky without turning your dish garden into a swamp!
Dish garden care is not complicated. With a little care, attention, and careful water management on your part, your dish garden will be prepped to bring extended beauty to your business, office, or home! Proper attention will not only ensure that your dish garden sticks around for as long as possible, and but it will also help you to appreciate your piece of living artwork even more!
