If you do not consider yourself to have a green thumb, yet you wish to add some living greenery to your interior decoration scheme, we recommend the pothos plant! Of all the ornamental plants a grower could cultivate, pothos have to be among the easiest to care for (Iannotti, 2021; Gombiths, 2021). These plants have come from the South Pacific originally but they are now established in many tropical regions of the globe.
Pothos plants can be grown in a very wide range of growing media and can be trained in many different ways. Winter Gardens offers these plants as hanging baskets, 6″ tubs, 4″ pots, and pothos poles (see image below). Once in your home, pothos can be trained into long, decorative trailing vines. Credible sources state that pothos can be rooted and grown directly in water (Gombiths, 2021; Rhoades, 2021; Dyer, 2020)! Clip a cutting from your pothos plant and stick it in a vase of water. You can add a couple drops of liquid fertilizer as well (Dyer, 2020), but don’t overdo it! Your pothos should root without difficulty and soon resume growth, and it can actually be grown this way indefinitely!
Ideally, provide your plant with bright indirect light. But if need be, pothos can tolerate shaded areas quite well. However, know that variegated pothos has been known to loose it’s variegation in low-light conditions.
Water and nutritional care for pothos is rather straightforward. When growing in a pot, allow the soil to dry out between waterings. But at the first signs of wilting, it’s important that you give your plant a thorough drink. Although pothos plants do not require large amounts of nutrition, a light monthly application of balanced fertilizer during the warm months will help maintain plant vigor and keep your plant all the more robust.
Are you a newbie to ornamental plant cultivation? Start with this old yet beautiful indoor staple! Are you a seasoned houseplant connoisseur? Don’t let your collection go without it! And if pothos is already a member of your houseplant collection, maybe it’s time to purchase a plant for a friend.
