Indeed, we should put “fern” in quotation marks, because this plant is not technically a fern at all. The plant we speak of is actually a member of the family Liliaceae. Also known as the Asparagus fern and scientifically as Asparagus densiflorus, this plant originated in South Africa.
Sprengeri ferns can be grown as outdoor perennials in the warmest parts of the U.S., and they have even become pests in certain areas (VanZile, 2021). Those of us who live in more temperate climates have the privilege of enjoying them as houseplants.
As such, these ferns require bright, indirect light. Careful watering is important, but allow your fern to dry out partially before each watering. A monthly application of balanced fertilizer, applied throughout the growing season, will encourage happy growth of your Sprengeri fern.
As your fern grows, enjoys its feathery appearance to the fullest, but beware that it’s graceful boughs do hide unpleasant thorns. Arm yourself with garden gloves and a little determination if need be, and don’t be deterred from having Sprengeri as an elegant part of your interiorscape.
