An easy plant to care for, the decorative and delightful Wandering Jew has found a home in hundreds–probably thousands–of houseplant collections! Also known by the common names Purple Jew, Inch Plant, and Spiderwort, these plants actually come in several species–all from the genus Tradescantia.
As houseplants, Wandering Jews behave quite well, assuming one knows how to work with them. Their vining habit makes them excellent candidates for the hanging basket, and their heavy pigment contrasts well with other ground covers in medley plantings.
Wandering Jews do not have a long useful lifespan. After a year or two (Rhoades, 2021; VanZile, 2021) they can outgrow their lushness and attractiveness. This means that growers should clip cuttings from older plants and start new planters by sticking the cut ends of these clippings 2-3 inches into moist soil. As the older plants wane in beauty the younger ones–full of lushness and vigor–can replace them.
In order to maintain the fullness of a Wandering Jew, it is helpful to pinch the growing tops of young vines. This encourages the plant to branch, rather than sending out long runners which quickly become unsightly. Keep you Wandering Jew in bright, indirect light for optimal performance. If your plant is not getting enough light, the stunning color and pattern of it’s leaves will begin to fade.
Moisture, humidity, and nutrition can also play a role in the health of Wandering Jews as well. As with most houseplants, chronically wet soil will kill your plant, but some available moisture is also important. Keep tabs on soil moisture, and allow the soil to partially dry before you water your plant. When it comes to humidity, these plants will appreciate the most humid place in your home–provided it gets enough light. Leaf browning can be a sign of insufficient humidity (VanZile, 2021). And the nutrition needs of your Wandering Jew will be met by a monthly application of balanced fertilizer diluted by half and applied spring through summer.
So join hundreds–probably thousands–of other houseplant lovers and add this beautiful creation to your collection of house plants. We don’t think you’ll regret it.
