The Winter Gardens seed was planted in 1983 when Jessie and Gordon Pendergrass relocated a 100×40 foot greenhouse to their rural property in Umpire, Arkansas.
For avid gardeners, this was a logical next step in a useful hobby, yet the idea of commercial enterprise was yet unborn. Soon Jessie was busy in the new greenhouse—with 4,000 square feet of space to fill!
It was a florist friend who first suggested it: "Why don't you keep tropical plants in your greenhouse and sell them to florist shops?" That was the question that got the ball rolling. Soon, with the acquisition of plant suppliers in Florida and a small delivery truck, Jessie was ready to begin operation.
The budding business venture soon became known to other florists who requested to be on the delivery route, and it wasn't long before they had to acquire larger trucks. By the mid 1990s Gordon retired from the cabinet shop to help keep up with the demands of the greenhouse business. It wasn't long before Winter Gardens became incorporated.
After 35 years of hard work and fine tuning the art of serving their florist customers, Gordon and Jessie were ready to retire and take things a little easier. So in July 2019, the business was purchased by their daughter Tammie and her husband Jon.
Today Winter Gardens' delivery trucks continue to serve over 120 shops around the region each week. Seven delivery routes cover parts of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas—striving to meet the needs of florist shops and garden centers each day with exceptional customer service.
